How to Hire a Licensed Drone Operator for Your Project

To hire a drone operator safely, confirm three things before anything else: an active FAA Part 107 certificate, commercial liability insurance, and a portfolio that matches your type of project. Everything else is about fit, price, and communication.

Anyone flying a drone for business in the U.S. must hold a Part 107 Remote Pilot Certificate. Hiring someone without one can expose you to liability if something goes wrong.

Step-by-step hiring checklist

  1. Define the project. Know your location, deliverables (photos, video, maps), deadline, and where the content will be used.
  2. Ask for the Part 107 certificate. A legitimate pilot will share their certificate number without hesitation. You can verify it through the FAA’s Airmen Inquiry search.
  3. Request proof of insurance. Look for at least $1 million in liability coverage. For larger commercial sites, ask to be named as an additional insured.
  4. Review relevant work. A great wedding videographer may not know how to shoot a construction site. Ask for samples from projects like yours.
  5. Ask about airspace. If your site is near an airport, the pilot should explain how they’ll get FAA authorization.
  6. Confirm the drone is registered. Commercial drones must be FAA-registered and broadcast Remote ID.
  7. Get a written quote. It should list deliverables, turnaround time, revisions, travel fees, and weather-rescheduling terms.
  8. Clarify ownership and licensing. Know whether you own the footage or receive a usage license.

Questions to ask on the first call

  • How long have you been flying commercially?
  • What drone and camera will you use, and do you have a backup?
  • What happens if weather cancels the shoot?
  • How long until I receive final files?
  • How many rounds of edits are included?

Warning signs

Be cautious if a pilot can’t produce a certificate, refuses to discuss insurance, quotes far below market, or seems unfamiliar with your site’s airspace. These are the most common sources of fines, damaged property, and unusable footage.
